South March BESS Zoning Application Deemed Complete by City
Brookfield Renewable is pleased to announce that our application to the City of Ottawa for a Zoning Bylaw Amendment (ZBA) for the South March battery energy storage system (BESS) has been deemed complete.
The 250-megawatt (MW) South March BESS, located in West Carleton, has been contracted by the Government of Ontario and the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) to ensure the continued availability and reliability of electricity supply to the City of Ottawa and surrounding region. Developed in equal partnership with the Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn First Nation, the investment will provide more than 200 construction jobs and contribute more than $5 million in community funding over its 20-year contract life.
Emphasizing our commitment to transparency and communication with the community, all studies and plans have been published to our website for the public to view.

The reports, studies, and related documentation are under technical review by City of Ottawa staff and other applicable agencies and may be subject to revision.
We would again like to express our appreciation to the City of Ottawa for its thorough review of our application and for the continued collaboration in delivering this critical infrastructure, as well as the participation of local leaders and community members whose feedback helped shape the project.
We are pleased to advance to the next stages of the development process, including further technical review. If successful, we look forward to commencing construction at South March in spring of 2026 and entering into commercial operations in 2027.
